The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the country and it was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on the twenty sixth of November in the year nineteen forty nine. It came into force on the twenty sixth of January nineteen fifty, a day that the nation celebrates as Republic Day. Dr B R Ambedkar chaired the drafting committee and is widely regarded as the chief architect of the document. The Constitution originally contained three hundred and ninety five articles arranged in twenty two parts along with eight schedules. It establishes India as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic that promises justice, liberty, equality and fraternity to every citizen. The Preamble sets out these guiding ideals in simple and powerful language. Fundamental Rights protect the citizen against the misuse of state power, while the Directive Principles of State Policy guide the government in framing laws for the welfare of the people. Fundamental Duties remind every citizen that rights come with responsibility. The Constitution also creates a federal structure with a strong union, an independent judiciary and a parliamentary form of government in which the real executive power rests with the council of ministers.
