SSC CGL Typing Test (DEST) 2026: Speed, Rules & Free Practice
The CGL skill test is short, qualifying and easy to underestimate. Here is exactly what is asked, how errors are treated, and a free 15-minute practice run on the same pattern.
CGL skill test at a glance
| Test name | DEST — Data Entry Speed Test |
|---|---|
| Requirement | 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes (~8,000 KDPH / ~27 WPM) |
| Passage language | English |
| Counts toward rank? | No — qualifying only, but failing costs the post |
| Mainly for | Tax Assistant (CBDT / CBIC) |
| Separate test | CPT (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for AAO / AAO / JSO type posts |
Speed and duration are set by SSC each cycle. Confirm the numbers in your own official notification before test day.
Why 27 WPM is not as easy as it sounds
On paper 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes looks gentle. In the hall it is a different experience: an unfamiliar keyboard, a printed passage you have never seen, an invigilator walking past, and no way to undo a mistake.
Candidates who practise at exactly the required speed usually land below it under pressure. Aim for 35 WPM in practice so 27 WPM feels slow on the day.
Typing is also the most predictable part of your preparation. Unlike reasoning or general awareness, daily repetition produces near-guaranteed improvement.
How mistakes are counted
DEST is judged on the accuracy of what you produce, not just raw keystrokes. Skill tests in the SSC family typically use a net-speed idea like this:
A wrong, missing or extra word counts as a full mistake; spacing, capitalisation and punctuation slips are usually treated as half mistakes. The practical takeaway is simple: typing fast and dirty scores worse than typing steadily and clean.
Assume backspace, delete and copy-paste are locked. If you practise with corrections allowed, your real accuracy is lower than your practice score suggests.
DEST vs CPT — which one applies to you
DEST (Data Entry Speed Test)
A pure typing test on an English passage. You type continuously for 15 minutes and must reach the prescribed key depressions with acceptable accuracy. It is generally required for Tax Assistant posts in CBDT and CBIC.
CPT (Computer Proficiency Test)
A three-module test covering word processing, spreadsheets and slide generation, used for posts such as Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer and Junior Statistical Officer. Typing speed still matters for the word-processing module, so speed practice is not wasted.
If your post needs neither
Many CGL posts have no skill test at all. Even then, a comfortable 35 WPM helps in Tier-II descriptive typing and in day-to-day office work after selection.
An 8-week plan from zero
| Weeks | Focus | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Correct finger placement, no looking down | 15–20 WPM at 95% accuracy |
| 3–4 | Full-passage practice, punctuation and numbers | 22–28 WPM |
| 5–6 | Strict backspace mode, weak-key drills | 30 WPM steady |
| 7–8 | Full 15-minute timed runs every other day | 35 WPM buffer speed |
Also preparing for Hindi typing?
CGL DEST uses an English passage, but if CHSL Hindi typing or a state exam is also on your list, practise Devanagari (Mangal / InScript) separately — the muscle memory is different.
Common questions
Is the SSC CGL typing test qualifying only?
Yes. DEST and CPT are qualifying in nature — they add no marks to your rank, but failing them removes you from consideration for the posts that require them.
How fast is 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes?
It works out to 8,000 key depressions per hour, roughly 27 words per minute at the standard 5 keystrokes per word. Practising at 35 WPM gives you a comfortable margin.
Which CGL posts need the typing test?
DEST is generally required for Tax Assistant posts in CBDT and CBIC. CPT (Word, Excel, PowerPoint modules) applies to posts such as Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer and Junior Statistical Officer. Always confirm against your own notification.
Can I use backspace during DEST?
The exam software is typically locked down, so plan on typing without corrections. Practise in strict backspace mode so mistakes stay visible instead of being fixed automatically.
Is the DEST passage in English or Hindi?
The DEST passage is given in English. Hindi typing practice is still useful if you are also preparing for CHSL Hindi typing or state exams.
How long does it take to reach DEST speed?
Most candidates starting from casual keyboard use reach 27–35 WPM in about 4–8 weeks of 20–30 minutes of daily practice.
