SSC Typing Test Error Calculation: Full Mistakes vs Half Mistakes
Most students who fail the SSC typing test don't fail on speed. They fail on mistakes they didn't know were being counted โ a missing space, a capital letter, a paragraph started without the Tab key.
This guide explains exactly how SSC counts your errors, based on SSC's own Revised Guidelines for Evaluation of Typing Test/DEST Scripts (English/Hindi) โ and lets you try it yourself in a test that scores you by the same rules.
The two kinds of mistakes
SSC divides every error into a full mistake (counts as 1) or a half mistake (counts as ยฝ).
Full mistakes โ count 1 each
- Missing word โ you skipped a word or number from the passage.
- Wrong word โ you typed a different word or number.
- Extra word โ you added a word that isn't in the passage.
- Spelling mistake โ any letter added, missed, repeated or changed. Example: "spelling" typed as speling, seplling or spellingg.
- Repeated word โ "I shall shall be grateful".
- Incomplete word โ a half-typed word, even at the very end, is a full mistake.
Half mistakes โ count ยฝ each
- Spacing โ no space between words (Ihope) or an extra space inside a word (I h ave).
- Capital letters โ a capital where it should be small, or the other way round. (This does not apply to Hindi typing.)
- Punctuation โ a comma, full stop or other mark missed, added or changed.
- Swapped words โ "hope I" instead of "I hope".
- Paragraph without Tab โ starting a paragraph with spaces instead of the Tab key, once per paragraph.
How the error percentage is calculated
First, add your mistakes, counting each half mistake as ยฝ:
Total mistakes = Full mistakes + (Half mistakes รท 2)
Then turn it into a percentage of the words you typed:
Error % = Total mistakes รท Words typed ร 100
SSC calculates errors up to two decimal places โ so 7.01% and 6.99% are different results.
A note on the formula: SSC's guideline defines what counts as a mistake but does not spell out what to divide by. TypeSarthi divides by the words you actually typed โ the stricter choice when you don't finish the passage โ so we never tell you that you qualified when the real exam might not.
Worked example
You type 300 words in your SSC CHSL test and make:
- 12 full mistakes
- 6 half mistakes
Total mistakes = 12 + (6 รท 2) = 15
Error % = 15 รท 300 ร 100 = 5.00%
For a UR candidate in CHSL, that's within the limit. One more paragraph without Tab, or a few more missed capitals, and that number climbs fast.
How much error is allowed?
| Exam | Time | Speed needed | Maximum errors |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL (LDC/JSA) | 10 minutes | 35 WPM English / 30 WPM Hindi | UR 7%, all other categories 10% |
| SSC CGL (DEST) | 15 minutes | ~2,000 key depressions (8,000 per hour) | UR 20%, OBC/EWS 25%, others 30% |
CGL DEST limits are from SSC's CGL 2025 notice. Always check your own exam's official notice.
Other rules from the official guideline
- Type numbers and years exactly as written in the passage.
- One space after every punctuation mark.
- Type in your chosen medium only โ if you opted for English, type in English.
- You don't have to retype the passage if you finish early โ but you can correct mistakes until time runs out.
- Anything typed that isn't in the passage is counted as a mistake.
The 5 mistakes that cost students the most
- Skipping a line while reading โ every missed word is a full mistake; one skipped line can mean 10+.
- Leaving a word half-typed when the timer ends โ that's a full mistake.
- Caps Lock left on โ every wrong capital is a half mistake, and they add up fast.
- Spaces instead of Tab at the start of each paragraph.
- Rushing for speed โ a few extra words per minute don't help if your error % crosses the limit.
Practise with the real rules
Reading the rules helps. Typing under them is what actually prepares you.
TypeSarthi's Exam Mode looks like the TCS iON exam screen and scores you by exactly the rules above. After each test you see every mistake, word by word โ what you typed, what it should have been, and whether it was a full or half mistake โ and you can practise just those words.
FAQ
Does using Backspace count as a mistake?
No. Correcting a word is allowed and isn't penalised. Only what's on screen when time ends is checked.
Are capital-letter mistakes counted in Hindi typing?
No. SSC's guideline says wrong capitalisation does not apply to Hindi.
What happens to words I didn't reach?
You aren't required to finish the passage. Words skipped in the middle count as missing; the unreached part at the end is not marked as missed words.
Is the typing test qualifying or scored?
It's qualifying โ you need to meet the speed and error requirements, but it doesn't add marks to your final score.
